Destination Calafate
El Calafate is located in the south of Patagonia in Argentina and the gateway to the majestic glaciers! The small tourist resort of Calafate is of both national and international interest, and the beginning of all glacier circuits. It is like an oasis of poplars, willows and pines on the border of the pampas and surrounded by magic glaciers that shine from a distance. El Calafate is also near Lake Argentino which extends itself for over 60 km just north of town. Its green water hides great depths of up to 985 feet (300 m) and is mysterious like most lakes which originated from glaciers. El Calafate gets its name from a small bush that produces delicious berries that are excellent to make jam. El Calafate has a dry climate with an average temperature of between 19 and minus 2 degrees centergrade.
The Glaciers National Park includes 47 glaciers which are all located within the Atlantic basin. A great time to visit is in February when Glacier Perito Moreno detaches itself - a giant spectacle that is best observed from a classic viewpoint and a perfect moment for a Whiskey on the Glacier Rocks! In El Calafate you can also board a modern yacht to navigate amidst the Glaciers, or walk into the center of a glacier, visit caves, taste local specialities, fish, or visit the Historical Interpretation Center that is similar to a museum and was just inaugurated in Calafate.
